We are sorry to anounce we are closing down the strawberry operation because it has been unprofitable over the last 4 years. I will keep the pictures below on our website for educational purposes.
We were the first commercial hydroponic strawberry grower in the State of Ohio using this "stand and pick" system.
We start by planting 8,000 new plants every April 1.
We cover the plants during cold spells or frost nights for protection. This helps produce an earlier crop compared to leaving them unprotected on the ground.
Strawberries start producing a few weeks after planting but these must be picked off so that plants grow bigger with a heavier fruit set.
Runners must be trimmed on a weekly basis so that all energy goes into fruit production. These plants are watered 3 minutes/3 times a day for proper growth. Organic sprays are used to control bugs.
We start picking mid-June. Fruit is always clean because they are hanging in the air, not on the ground. There is no mold or rot of the fruit from hiding under the leaves when wet. There are no slugs or snakes to scare you! This farm is friendly to seniors and people with limitations since there is "no bending or kneeling"!
Days for picking vary according to weather and amount of people picking the preceding days. Call first at 330-899-9230. We provide picking buckets. Carry home baskets are 35 cents each and are re-useable. You may bring your own container to take home berries if you wish.
Instructional tours are available free of charge by calling 330-899-9230. We explain how the system was built, planting and growing schedules. Tours must be scheduled in advance.
